Betfred has officially ceased operations in Nevada, marking the latest in a series of state exits for the sportsbook operator. With this closure, Pennsylvania is now the only state in the United States where Betfred continues to operate.

A Rapid Decline in US Presence

As recently as September 2023, Betfred was active in 10 states. However, the company began withdrawing from several key markets in 2024, leaving Maryland in June, Arizona in September, and Virginia in October—less than two years after launching in the state.

This significant contraction highlights the challenges Betfred has faced in establishing a sustainable foothold in the competitive US sports betting landscape.

Leadership Amid Turbulence

In September 2023, Betfred USA appointed Kresimir Spajic as CEO to lead the sportsbook through its next phase of growth. At the time of his appointment, Spajic expressed optimism about the company’s potential:

“I’m truly excited to embark on this journey as the CEO of Betfred USA. I look forward to working with our exceptional domestic and global talent and partners. Together, we aim to build a sustainable business in the US by delivering unparalleled value and support to our customers while upholding a strong commitment to responsible gaming.”

Despite his ambitions, the operator has since significantly scaled back its operations, leaving many to question whether Pennsylvania will remain Betfred’s last US stronghold or if further changes are on the horizon.

Responsible Gaming Initiatives

Even amid its challenges, Betfred USA has made strides in promoting responsible gaming. In March 2024, the operator partnered with US Integrity (USI) to implement measures designed to prevent coaches, student-athletes, and staff from engaging in prohibited sports betting activities.

This move underscores Betfred’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards even as it navigates a shifting business environment.

What’s Next for Betfred in the US?

With Pennsylvania now serving as its sole US market, questions linger about Betfred’s future strategy. Will the operator double down on its presence in the Keystone State, or will it follow the pattern seen in other states and exit entirely?

As the US sports betting industry continues to grow and evolve, operators like Betfred face mounting pressure to compete in a crowded market. Whether the company can find a path to sustainability in Pennsylvania—or elsewhere—remains to be seen.
